Expatriate Disability Insurance: Individual and Group Expatriate Long Term Disability.
As we have found with life insurance, there are many instances where employers need to provide a dedicated international long term disability insurance plan for U.S. expatriates and TCNs. It is a mistake to rely on the U.S. domestic LTD plan to cover those on foreign assignment.
Expatriate LTD; Why not the U.S. Plan?
90% of U.S. insurance brokers don't recognize this as the Lloyd's of London building, the most famous insurance structure in the world. Your U.S. broker may also recommend using the U.S. LTD plan to cover employees working internationally. Has this been cleared and approved by the U.S. LTD carrier? In most cases the answer is no. A single expat may have been added years ago and the size grew quietly and under the radar for years.
U.S. LTD carriers need to operate by their filed policy language. The geographic scope of their coverage is almost never outside of North America. Under these circumstances, your LTD carrier cannot make an exception to cover a disability that occurred abroad no matter how big of a customer you are, because it's a legal issue for them.
What about international LTD for TCNs?
Here is your expatriate group. How many are covered by the U.S. LTD plan but need an international disability insurance plan due to holes in the U.S. plan's scope of coverage?. How many are non-U.S. expatriates? What does this TCN group do for international LTD insurance?
Many TCNs do not need to be offered a U.S. style international disability insurance plan. The standard in the rest of the world is not monthly payments until age 65 but a Lloyd's of London style "PTD program." PTD stands for permanent and total disability. These international disability plans pay a lump sum in the event of disability at the end of a 3 year monthly payout schedule.
