Local National Insurance in Spain, Information for companies that employ Spanish local nationals

Legislation passed in 1994 is the basis for the current Spanish social security system, offering both cash and medical benefits. Coverage under the system is available to both employees and pensioners. Insured persons are required to make a contribution of a certain percentage of earnings based on varying wage classes.

Under the Spanish healthcare system medical services are available to patients directly, provided the doctors and hospitals concerned are affiliated with the National Institute of Social Security or are contracted by the regional autonomous health service.

Corporate private medical plans with large insurance companies are common in Spain, with employees often required to pay a small excess. Comprehensive private coverage for Spanish local nationals is less common and may be offered only to top management. Of course, coverage is good throughout the European Union.

Citizens of Spain have the right to receive health care with equal access to benefits. The new law in 2012 now tightens the rules for coverage for non-Spaniards and expatriates working in Spain who are registered for resident status and who are living in Spain for at least three months. Business travel to Spain for trips under 90 days does not apply. Under the law, foreigners working in Spain must demonstrate that they are working or studying in Spain, and demonstrate they have health insurance, for example, through an expatriate medical insurance plan in Spain from elsewhee in the EU or from the United States.

Foreign citizens who have not been authorized to reside in Spain will be able to receive medical services only in an emergency due to a sickness or accident, pregnancy complications for expatriates in Spain and for children.

Some non-Spanish residents now have identification cards that allow them to receive health care for a period of up two years. These cards expire August 2012.
