Local National Insurance in Spain, Information for companies that employ Spanish local nationals
Legislation passed in 1994 is the basis for the current Spanish social security system, offering both cash and medical benefits. Coverage under the system is available to both employees and pensioners. Insured persons are required to make a contribution of a certain percentage of earnings based on varying wage classes.
Under the Spanish healthcare system medical services are available to patients directly, provided the doctors and hospitals concerned are affiliated with the National Institute of Social Security or are contracted by the regional autonomous health service.
Corporate private medical plans with large insurance companies are common in Spain, with employees often required to pay a small excess. Comprehensive private coverage for Spanish local nationals is less common and may be offered only to top management. Of course, coverage is good throughout the European Union.
