U.S. expatriate assignments in the U.K. are easy. Think again, the percentage of expatriates coming home early from the U.K. can be as high as China.

The Brits like to remind the Americans that they have been sending expatriates to work around the world for longer than the U.S. has been a nation, and much longer than this clock is old.

The initial and original expatriate policy and procedures were established by the British over 400 years ago !

This section discusses expat insurance U.K.

Expatriate insurance in the U.K. (or you have British expatriates working in the U.S. or elsewhere. We discuss U.K. expat insurance.)

The United Kingdom has the world's most famous government healthcare system called the NHS, or National Health Insurance system based on legislation from just after World War II. About 25% of the U.K. population does have a top up medical program provided in the U.K. by the employer to supplement the NHS. It's very common for British expats to be enrolled in an expatriate group health insurance plan with BUPA being the largest expatriate health insurance carrier in the world today. Like most government healthcare systems, it's of no use when U.K. nationals are living abroad or in the U.S.

About 80% of British local nationals receives all medical from the NHS, meaning they have no other insurance or a private scheme. Corporate sponsored supplemental medical and dental plans are being more popular as time goes on.

British Expatriates in the U.S.

U.K. nationals in the U.S. have a much easier time assimilating into the U.S. domestic insurance programs and can more quickly be enrolled in U.S. managed care such as PPO plans. In other sections we discuss when foreign nationals should be enrolled in the U.S. medical plan vs. a dedicated international group insurance plan for foreign nationals in the U.S.

U.K. expatriates expected to spend more than one year in the U.S. can be enrolled in U.S. based insurance plans like HMOs and PPOs. Like an foreign national living in the U.S. the most important thing to explain to them is "the U.S. network" and the need to see network doctors and pharmacists which is a foreign concept to most foreign nationals living in the U.S.

U.S. expatriates in the U.K.

U.S. expatriates working in the U.K. have a harder time assimilating to the culture than what is typically expected. Because the culture of the U.S. and the U.K. are so similar including a common language of course, an expat assignment in the U.K. should be easy. This is not always the case.

U.S. expatriates to the U.K. are not nearly as prepared as say, U.S. expats to China for example, where and expatriate spends more time with cultural training and finding social support groups before the move.

U.K. nationals living in continental Europe

All U.K. nationals are entitled to reduced cost or free medical treatment when temporarily visiting a European Union country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. To obtain this treatment they will need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card free of charge. Brits would only be covered for treatment provided under the state scheme at home.

The government stresses that the EU Health Insurance Card should not be a replacement for travel insurance and it is highly recommended that travelers cover themselves for unexpected costs, including medical emergency repatriation.

British expats living full time in the EU will need a permanent international health insurance policy.
